GEELONG FIELD GUIDE

If you are planning a trip to Geelong to check out a Piccadilly Market event or you are a local looking for something cool to do in the amazing Geelong Region, we have put together a fabulous field guide for you to make a day of it.

THE HOT CHICKEN PROJECT

Located in Geelong's coolest street lined with some great bars, restaurants, cafes and shops. I am salivating just thinking about the delicious crispy fried chicken with hot sauce (you can choose your strength, I like it HOT). Great salad sides, pickles and fries all accompanied by a cold beer. YUM.

WAH WAH GEE

If it's a view you are after this is the place to be. Head across the road from the market and walk down the pier to the beautiful white building on the end and you will find this gem of a place. The crew will take you through a journey of sharing plates ranging from spicy steamed buns to Asian curries cleverly crafted by some of the best kitchen ninjas in town. If you are hungry go for the Feed Me option. They also serve up a mean cocktail.

FEAST

Feast Geelong is a café and vegan deli showcasing the best in plant based eating! With chefs creating a variety of nourish bowls, smoothies, raw and baked desserts, burgers, soups and other hot dishes, loads of gluten free options and a crack team of baristas doling out the Ocean Grind coffee! They have a great range of alternative lattes and mushroom elixirs. No extra charge for plant milks! Open 8-4 weekdays 8-2 weekends.

GEELONG CELLAR DOOR

Another Little Malop St location (see, I told you it was cool) A  cute local wine bar with a Parisian feel and retail outlet offering a specialised selection of fine wines, cheeses, and charcuterie. I may have spent a bit of time here.

 ROYAL GEELONG YACHT CLUB

Another waterfront location to enjoy our fabulous views across the bay.  Grab a drink, a few friends and chill out.

SAILORS REST

Sailors' Rest has a long history of providing entertainment to locals and visitors in Geelong, first to seafarers and now to you! They have recently reopened after an epic renovation that includes a restaurant, beer garden, cocktail lounge and rooftop bar located on Geelong's Waterfront a short 3 minute stroll from Deakin.  They even have ⚓️ Sunday Sessions from 12pm every Sunday.

THE PICKERS UNION

If you are driving into Geelong and need to refuel before you hit Piccadilly, check out this awesome cafe for a great coffee or one of their decadent treats especially the jam donut or nutella muffin. DELISH. Whilst there pop next door to the Geelong Vintage Market, a treasure trove of amazingness that takes you on a trip down memory lane.

UNCLE DONUT

Speaking of donuts, you can find these super popular delicious morsels in Little Malop Street. I am tipping the Hot Cross Bun will be a winner. They do tend to sell out so get in early.

GEELONG ART GALLERY

Geelong Gallery was established in 1896 and is one of Australia’s leading art galleries, with a magnificent collection of Australian and European painting, sculpture, printmaking and decorative arts dating from the 18th century to today. The Gallery’s outstanding collection includes many works of national significance such as Eugène von Guérard’s View of Geelong 1856, and Frederick McCubbin’s A bush burial 1890.  One particular focus of the collection is early images of the Geelong region, documenting the evolution of this important city and its environment.

20 July 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landing and the first steps taken on the lunar surface by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. This exhibition is programmed to coincide with this significant milestone, and brings together artistic responses to the celestial body that orbits the Earth.
For centuries artists from many cultures have been inspired by the Moon, the most prominent feature of our night sky. The exhibition includes historical works created when the Moon could only be viewed from afar, works from the era of the 1960s space race, and more contemporary responses informed by the imagery and scientific knowledge acquired through space exploration.
Just as the Moon itself can be viewed from multiple vantage points from the Earth, works in the exhibition will be located throughout the galleries. Links with literature, film, music and science will also be explored, highlighting the Moon’s capacity to engender creativity and inquiry.
Across five key exhibition themes, The Moon will invite a new engagement with, and provide new perspectives on, this enigmatic celestial body that we all see and are influenced by.
Runs from 15 June to 01 September 2019
NATIONAL WOOL MUSEUM

Located only 5 minutes from Deakin in a beautiful old building.

At the National Wool Museum, you will discover why fleece from Australia's sheep was at the heart of our economy for nearly 200 years.

Geelong is a city synonymous with wool and the wool industry – sheep farming began here in 1835 and the first of many woollen mills opened here in 1868. For many years the city was known as the 'wool centre of the world'.

In 1988, the National Wool Museum was established as Australia’s only comprehensive museum of wool.

Soooooo many places and very hard to narrow down to a few but here goes.

THE BELLARINE WHISKERY

This is a relative newcomer to our area and is a fantastic spot to check out whilst in the area and is approx a 25 minute drive from Deakin.

Bellarine Distillery was established in 2015 by Russ Watson and is the first Distillery on the Bellarine Peninsula and the first in the greater Geelong region since the closure of Corio Distillery in the 1980’s.

The idea originated - as most great ideas do - after a couple of alcoholic beverages. Having visited Scotland in 2012 and the romance of the highlands, the concept of starting their own distillery seemed like a good idea.

It took a further 3 years to take delivery of their 1st Still “Ronald” then another 3 to complete work on the cellar door and open to the public.

JACK RABBIT VINEYARD

Jack Rabbit is a must visit destination on the Bellarine.

Unrivalled views across the bay to Geelong, the You Yangs and Melbourne.
Experience the delectable food, take a guided tasting of the diverse stable of sophisticated cool climate wines.  Soak up the spectacular and ever-changing views and intimate coastal ambience.  The ultimate Bellarine experience awaits.

BELLARINE RAILWAY

The Bellarine Railway is a volunteer operated organisation offering heritage train rides and experiences between Queenscliff and Drysdale, featuring a unique collection of steam and diesel trains originating from around Australia.

Private carriage hire is available as part of the heritage service and perfect for children's parties or groups - bookings are essential.

Family activities are offered during the school holidays and on special occasions, such as visits from the Easter Bunny and Santa Trains, along with Halloween Specials .

Experiences and special events include Steam and Diesel Train Driver Experiences, Day out with Thomas weekends, special occasion charters and tailored group and school trips.

This barely even scratches the surface on what our amazing region offers. Hope to see you at our next event on Sunday 4 August @ Deakin Waterfront Campus
