50 Shades of Grey is turning me 50 shades of pink

My first ever newspaper column appeared in the Geelong Advertisers Saturday GT lift out.

Erotic novel is not to be toyed with

Fifty Shades of Grey is turning me 50 Shades of pink and not for the reasons you would think

I am sure you have heard about 50 Shades of Grey in some shape or form over the last few weeks. Everywhere I turn, its there. It could quite possibly be mentioned in every 4th post on my Facebook feed. There are people devouring the trilogy in weeks and are left wanting more.

What is turning me 50 shades of PINK is not reading the book, well maybe a little but more on that later, it is more the places I am able to purchase this book.

There I was at the Target toy sale last week wandering up and down the numerous aisles showcasing every type of barbie known to little girls, fluffy pillow pets, pretty Crayola crayon gift packs and boxes of Lego and smack bang in the middle of all this kiddie cuteness was a bookshelf. The bookshelf was well stocked with all three titles of 50 Shades. Does anyone else have a problem with this? How is it not sealed in plastic or better yet locked with a padlock that requires you to get the key from the front desk? I am giggling as I imagine the microphone blaring through Target “ can someone please help the Mum at Counter 1 with the keys for her 50 Shades book”. This however is not the case, our children can pick up the book, flick through and be confronted with all kinds of things that they most certainly are not allowed to view at the movies or on TV.

We are talking porn here people. I am not a prude by any stretch of the imagination BUT this ruffles my feathers.

It had me thinking what constitutes pornography these days. Perhaps it is not printed matter. Maybe my definition is way off the real definition so Google came to the rescue and this is what I got, Pornography(noun)- Printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity. Was I surprised? Not at all, this aligns with my understanding of porn. Wikipedia goes on to say Pornography may use a variety of media, including books (check) and hardcore pornography explicitly showcases penetrative intercourse (check) .

So there in the middle of Target in the middle of Geelong, at the front door of my newsagency and proudly displayed at the Airport bookshop with an accompanying poster is not only porn but hardcore porn. Is anyone blushing yet?

Do the sales people unpacking these books even know what it is they are so readily handling? I know we have become more liberal in our thinking as each decade whizzes by but surely this is overstepping the mark.

If the book was visual rather than in print would more people object? I believe so, there is good reason to why the Playboys and Penthouses are not sold at everyday convenience stores advertised front and center.

I am not about to go waving my banner down the street but I am disappointed and shocked that our children already exposed to so much at such a young age have this to deal with too. Would a vulnerable teenage girl have a flick through and think this is normal behavior and what is expected of her in a sexual relationship? What about a teenage boy thinking this is what he needs to do to keep his new girlfriend happy?

Back to the book, I don’t see what the fuss is all about. In the risk of offending this is not a “readers” book.  I am 63% through now (that’s more than half way for non Kindle readers) and am bored, bored, bored. I don’t need to be told in every chapter how devastatingly good looking he is (25 times), I got that at Go.  There is a wonderful search option in Kindle that has enabled me to find out the following, there are 40 references to lip biting,  58 references to Ana’s inner goddess, 80 mentions of her boring subconscious and a whopping 93 uses of the word ‘crap’ . Do we really need to know that she “blushes” and “flushes” 125 times?

It’s also terribly unbelievable however trying hard to disguise itself as believable.  An awkward 23 year old College Virgin meets 27 y.o multi millionaire with his own helicopter who buys her a car after a few weeks of meeting. Really?!?  I am an avid reader and this is not the best written word, far from it and I am pulling teeth to get through the last 37%.

The last thing turning me a shade of pink is that this book is being called “Mummy Porn”, can anyone say condescending? Do we call adult content that men enjoy “Daddy porn”? Eww!!! and downright offensive in my humble opinion.

Apparently they are making a movie. I am keen to see who will allow their teenagers go see that one.

Would love to hear your thoughts so don't be shy.

P.S I have finished the book since writing this column and am it got no better.

Smash Journals and more

I feel like I am a teenager with my excitement level on todays Amazon delivery. I have been wanting these super cool Smash journals for the longest time and they have been sitting quietly in my shopping cart for months. Every week I would go in and visit them but was finding it hard to justify the shipping costs. Then 2 weeks ago I accidentally pressed complete order (no really!!!!) They arrived today and I am squealing with delight, even better in the flesh then on a screen.

I purchased 4 of them which included one for all 3 kids but honestly I don't think the girls are up to appreciating this level of paper beauty just yet. I have always been a journal keeper, a scrapper both paper and digitally, I am mad about Pinterest so I guess it makes sense that I am doing hand stands for these. Each journal has a cool theme which I didn't really realise until they arrived. So many pages of cool sayings, lists, designs, pictures etc. Brilliant for the creative mind. I am going to have one for recording all the children's funny things they do and say and another for my trip to South America in a few months. Here are some of the inside pages.

It comes with a pen/glue stick attached. You can also order lots of extra fun stuff like tabs, folders, dividers, quotes etc.

If you are still wondering what all the excitement is about check out this video.

You can read more here on the Smash Journal Blog to get some ideas. I also snuck in The Pioneer Woman's latest Cookbook. She has got it going on in the kitchen. If you have never heard of her, you are missing out big time so go check out her awesome blog. She has some pretty amazing giveaways as well.

So race over to Amazon and fill your cart.

These sound so yummy! I would never have thought of those flavours. I am obsessed with Offspring, making crate paper pom poms and to master making the macaron.

You have won a  3 pack of Bellalu lip glosses that will be launched on the 29th of July...yummy!!!

A Lip Smacking Giveaway from Bellalu

I would love to introduce you to another new and awesome business that will be showcasing at Piccadilly on Sunday 29th July. Meet Hannah from Bellalu, Hannah is also very kindly giving away 3 of her deliciously, scrummy lip balms.

Tell us a little about yourself?

I consider myself pretty social, love dogs and absolutely love drinking coffee. I live locally, and when I am not socializing, I am at home gardening or making lip balms.  I live with my boyfriend and little baby – Tonka, our 38kg boxer dog.  I work full time for a cause I am passionate about – helping others.  So I love a diary full, not blank is what I am saying. If it is blank that would signify an emergency and I would fill it up immediately. (Usually to boyfriends despair!)

How did you come up with your business name?

My friends and family call me Bellalu, Bella or Bells, so it really is just who I am.

Tell us how your product/range came about?
I purchased a gritty lip balm so decided to make a range that ticked the following boxes
1.        Must smell yummy
2.        Must be smooth on lips
3.        Must have heaps of flavours to choose from
4.        Must have simple ingredients so customers know what they are putting on their lips (how many long words are on ingredient lists that you can’t pronounce these days!)
5.        Must be priced well – hence my market package deals
6.        Must last on lips
7.        Must come packaged in adorable boxes and gift tags
8.        Must include a button (just because I am a button collector)

How long have you been in business for?
Just going 12 months – yippee

What inspires you?
Walking around markets, traveling and listening to other people’s stories.

Have you always been ‘crafty’ or has it bloomed later in life?
Yes. I couldn’t imagine myself not being able to express myself creatively. Both my Nan and mother are fantastic at sewing, cross-stitch and tatting. I can recall going to craft sessions at the local sewing store and doing my first market aged 12. I’ve always inspired to own my own business. I even made and sold gum nut magnets in primary school to buy a pair of Doc Martins! Determined I guess.

When you are not busy creating what do you love doing?
I love going out for coffee, spending time on the family farm, walking my dog and shopping. Did I mention walking around markets? I have to admit, sometimes I drag my boyfriend around them, but they are such a happy place to be. I am in my element being surrounded my crafty, talented people.

What is something cool that most people wouldn’t know about you?
I have a Scuba Diving Licence.

If money were no object what would be your dream destination?
New York. It’s definitely on my to do list.

What are you reading right now?
A Biography called ALEK. It’s about Alek Wek a South Sudanese British Model and how she was discovered.

What is your favorite website(s) ?
Bellalu, facebook, Frankie, eBay, Trip Advisor and Piccadilly of course.

Bellalu will be launching 3 new flavours at Piccadilly(feeling very special)....drum roll..... Lemon Meringue Pie, Banana Split and Chocolate Sundae.  My daughter is obsessed with lip balms so she is going to be all over these. Tell us what you are obsessed with at the moment for a chance to win this gorgeous pack.

Enter by Friday 8pm and be sure to leave an email address so I can contact the winner. Good Luck!!!!

I will kick it off by saying I am still totally loving doilies and vintage caravans...

and the winner is......

We are very fancy at drawing winners in our house, tonight it was my daughter choosing a number between 1 and 34 and we got 3 which is Cathy who is incredibly deserving of a bravery prize consisting of 2 double passes to see Brave courtesy of Disney Pixar. This was her entry...

The bravest thing I have done was to stay strong for our very sick baby (6 months in hospital) while we mourned his twin brother. Was a very rocky journey which has continued his entire 14 years as he has 15 specialists. I have continued to have to stay strong and brave.

My second bravest thing was offering to care for a family of 5 kids, locals we didn't know who were all lower primary and preschool age with youngest being 1yo, for 1 day (while their mum went up to visit their father who had had a serious car accident) but end up looking after them for 4 weeks in my home...beds everywhere lol.
What a lovely thing you are doing to give a family the chance to see the movie :-)

Wow!!!! that sure is some big stuff you had to deal with. Everyone's answer was wonderful and it
seems I have a lot of super brave readers out there. I really enjoyed reading everyones stories.

I have also done a redraw for the Jujo Baby Giveaway as both winners did not contact me. Louise Ryan and Stephlee Photography are the lucky new winners of the gorgeous suits.

If all 3 winners could email me their addresses to janina@piccadillymarket.com.au, I will organise for your prizes to be sent.

Brave Review and Family Ticket Giveaway

My children and I were very lucky to have been invited along to a Brave premiere in Melbourne a few weeks back but have been saving up this review and giveaway until the school holidays hit. We had such an awesome time and were entertained with bag pipes and scottish dancers, both my girls won a Brave pack each for dressing up, you can imagine their delight.

Its cold and rainy outside so a trip to the movies should keep the troops happy.

Brave is the 10th original Disney/Pixar film and the first to have a female lead (yeh!!) Directed by Andrew and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, "Brave" is a grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and signature Pixar humour. We loved Merida, a fiery young red head teenager who struggles with finding herself, with creating her own destiny. I identified strongly with her and also see a lot of my daughter Lola in her. It's a store of courage and above all bravery. Very much loved King Fergus played by the hilarious Billy Connolly.

Courtesy of Disney Pixar I have 2 double passes for one lucky reader. Just leave a comment telling me one of the bravest things you have ever done. A winner will be drawn at random tomorrow night at 8pm so get in quick. Be sure to leave an email address so I can contact you. Its amazing how many people have won prizes on here but never got in contact with me.
